Who I Was then...
I was born on January 31, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I was always thought of as quiet, under spoken, and shy. I had a few good friends through school but I never shared such a connection with anyone as I did with Jack. He had been my best friend for years, but it felt like decades. Before I entered the Army Nurse Corps, I worked as a school teacher for elementary students and Jack worked at a garage as a mechanic. We were in love. The summer before he was recruited, he had proposed and I spent my time daydreaming about our wedding and what our children would look like. It was perfect.
The school I worked at didn't have a nurses office, and being children, there was always someone who needed a bandage. Once I even did stitches. I loved my job, and my life. I loved being young and enjoying my life now that the Depression was over. My friends and I would go out dancing, to the movies, and take day trips to the shore. I loved music, fashion, and listening to the radio. But for some reason that all seems so insignificant compared to what I saw overseas.
